Get Your Car Ready for Summer Road Trips

June is here, and that means road trip season is right around the corner for a lot of folks in Kirkland. Whether you’re heading over the mountains, down to Oregon, or just planning some day trips around the Eastside, your car needs to be ready before you load up and go. At Jay’s Kirkland Autocare, we’ve seen it plenty of times: a car that’s been running fine around town suddenly has trouble once it’s asked to handle a long drive. Let’s go over what you should check before you hit the road this summer.

Why Pre-Trip Checks Really Matter

A short commute is one thing. Hours on the freeway with a full car and the AC running is another. Long drives put more stress on your engine, your tires, and your fluids than day-to-day driving does. If there’s a small issue hiding somewhere, a road trip is exactly the kind of thing that brings it to the surface, usually at the worst possible time. Taking care of a few things now, before you leave, can save you from a headache later on your trip.

Start With Fluids and Filters

Your engine needs the right fluids to run well, especially when you’re asking more of it. Before any long drive, it’s smart to check your oil, coolant, brake fluid, and transmission fluid. If you’re not sure when your oil was last changed, now’s a good time to get it done. While you’re at it, check your air filter too. A clogged filter can hurt your gas mileage, and nobody wants to burn extra fuel on a long trip.

Don’t Skip the Tires

Your tires are what’s actually touching the road, so they deserve some real attention before a big trip. Check your tread depth and look for any uneven wear, cracks, or bulges. Low tire pressure is a common issue too, and it can lead to poor handling or even a blowout if you’re not careful. Don’t forget to check your spare tire either. It’s easy to overlook, but you’ll be glad it’s ready if you ever need it.

Give Your Brakes and Battery Some Love

Long drives, especially through hills or mountain passes, put extra strain on your brakes. If they’ve been squeaking, grinding, or just feeling a little soft, get them checked before you go. Your battery matters too. Summer heat can actually shorten a battery’s life, so if yours is getting up there in age, it’s worth having it tested. A quick check now beats getting stuck somewhere with a car that won’t start.

Check Your AC Before You Need It

Nothing ruins a road trip faster than an AC that can’t keep up once the sun’s beating down on the highway. If your air’s been blowing warm or just isn’t as cold as it used to be, don’t wait until you’re stuck in traffic to deal with it. Getting your AC checked now means you’ll actually enjoy the drive instead of sweating it out with the windows down.
